Author John Keel most famous for The Mothman Prophecies has some interesting thoughts on the connection between the electromagnetic field and paranormal phenomena which he dubbed 'The Superspectrum'. Lets explore this a little further

Most paranormal investigators will tell you that they believe a spirit can either give off EMF or can in some ways manipulate the electromagnetic field. It is why quite a lot of investigators use EMF meters such as K2’s and Mel Meters to measure anomalies. I have spoken before about EMF exposure and how high levels of EMF can cause a person to feel something paranormal is happening, but I haven’t really spoken about the possibilities from a spiritual or possibly paranormal perspective. More than once I have had a person ask me, how do we know that say if a K2 meter or a Mel Meter is detecting something, that it is a spirit and not some sort of inter-dimensional being? What if it is a UFO that we could not see gave off EMF? Why do people detect EMF in remote bushland where people believe there are elemental creatures or even things like Yeti’s or Bigfoot? So let’s look at this connection and discuss the concept of ‘Superspectrum’ entities otherwise known as ultraterrestrials.

What is the 'Superspectrum'?

A google search of this word will confuse you as you will be inundated with references of mobile phone photograph technology that allows you to photograph in low light without a flash. While this is great technology, especially for those of us who spend a lot of time taking photos in low light, I am referring to something a little different. Journalist John Keel is most famous for his research and his book ‘The Mothman Prophecies’. Around the same time he released this book, he also released a book titled ‘The Eighth Tower : On Ultraterrestrials and the Superspectrum’. It is also something he covers in his book ‘The Cosmic Question’. He talks about paranormal phenomena tying together as sort of a unified theory. Whether it is something like mothman, an inter-dimensional beings or even a spirit, he believes that they are able to navigate up and down the electromagnetic spectrum and can appear or disappear at their own will. This is what he has dubbed as ‘The Superspectrum’. The beings that are able to navigate this spectrum he has called ‘ultraterrestrials’.

At this moment you are surrounded by all kinds of energy, much of it manmade, vibrating on every frequency from the ultrahigh frequencies of modern military radios to the very low frequencies of generators and telephone lines. There are many other forms of energy mixed in as well. And there are, as we shall see, forms of energy on such high frequencies they can not be detected with even the most sophisticated scientific instruments. If your eyes were tuned beyond the very narrow confines of the spectrum of visible light, yon would find yourself looking into a thick fog of dazzling, unreal colors. Some psychics and UFO percipients have described these occult colors, and they have always been used to symbolize the supernatural entities. If you could peer into this superspectrum, you would undoubtedly see some frightening things - strange shapes and eerie ghostlike forms moving through a sea of electrical energy like fish in some alien sea.

The Cosmic Question

Does the above offer an explanation as to how psychics can visualise what they interpret to be spirits or even aliens or these ultraterrestrials? Is this how some people see coloured aura's? Are they somehow getting a glimpse inside this superspectrum? It also means that perhaps the general interpretation of what a 'spirit' is not entirely correct. While of course it is possible we are communicating with someone who has passed away, how do we know we are not communicating with an ultraterrestrial? Keel even states that he believes our brains are made up of a circuit and that it is plugged into the electromagentic field in some sort of way. He says a superpsychic could then potentially tap into that certain frequency of a person 1000 years from now and read their subconscious. Is this how some of the information comes through?

This superspectrum is the source of all paranormal manifestations from extrasensory perception (ESP) to flying saucers, little green men and tall, hairy monsters. It is hard to pin down scientifically because it is extradimensional, meaning that it exists outside our own space-time continuum yet influences every thing within our reality.

The Eighth Tower

Keel backs up his theory with years of case studies, however like anything, there is no proof that this is the case and quite a lot of people will already have raised eyebrows reading this. It is certainly something to at least consider when looking at the different sources for paranormal phenomena. We also cannot ignore the paranormal field's fascination with EMF.

The electromagnetic field and the paranormal

We don't really know for sure where the connection of EMF and the paranormal came from. There is no definitive source, it seems to be one of those theories that a lot of people accept as an explanation for paranormal phenomena. A lot of people don't like using certain EMF detectors because the chance of a false reading is far too high. Keel even said above that there is energy out there that even the most sophisticated scientific devices cannot measure, so why would a simple K2 device be capable of measuring it? Whether or not you use a device like a K2 meter, what we can't ignore are some of the claims that have been consistent with EMF interference and paranormal phenomena. People report cars stalling and radio stations changing in cars when in the presence of a UFO. In cases of potential hauntings, people have reported lights switching on and off or flickering around the same time other phenomena seems to be present. Clocks stop at certain times or needles on a compass start going around in circles. It does seem that there is some sort of disturbance within the electromagnetic field when activity is reported. Does this mean that the presence of EMF indicates it is coming from within the superspectrum?

Are we 'making it happen'?

Above Keel states that an ultraterrestrial can show it self whenever and wherever it wants. Then there is the idea that 'we attract that which we think about'.

Some UFOs were directly related to the human consciousness, just as ghostly apparitions are often the product of the percipient’s mind. There are deeply rooted psychic and psychological factors in the UFO phenomenon, and the sudden appearance of a light in the sky triggers and releases the human energy that stimulated seemingly supernatural events.

I have spoken many times about the concept that we are responsible for psychical phenomena something which Keel indicates as well. In the Mothman prophecies, Keel spoke about how residents of point pleasant were all experiencing similar phenomena such as sightings of the mothman, poltergeist activity, tv's burning out and phone calls with no one on the other end. It was implied that this phenomena was more caused psychically from the people themselves. Above he talks about the 'deeply rooted psychic and psychological factors in UFO phenomena' and that perhaps even just witnessing such an event unlocks something within us. It was this that he believed caused the people themselves to cause this poltergeist activity for example. If we paranormal investigators are exposing ourselves to these kind of situations all the time, does this mean perhaps we have unknowingly unlocked psychical abilities within ourselves and we are causing things to happen. If we go on an investigation to record and EVP thinking in our minds that we want something to say 'hello', are we unknowingly making this happen unaware we have this ability?

Perception

It is thought that we see the world in the way that we have been educated to see it. We all see things quite differently based on how we have been 'trained' to view the world. Even something like religion has a huge impact on the way we perceive the world and especially paranormal phenomena. Perhaps this is why psychic mediums can see things that I cannot see as they have trained their minds and tapped into their abilities for years. By rationalising paranormal phenomena, are we closing off what is potentially around us? If we see a tree in front of us, we are educated and trained to see it as a tree. Why? Because that is what we were taught. We know that our brain looks for patterns and likes things that are familar. If it cannot distinguish what something is, it makes it look 'familar' to us and this is where we get things like pareidolia and we see faces in clouds because our brain cannot make sense of it. When we start investigating the paranormal for example, we notice that slowly we pick up on a lot more things. Is it because our brain is noticing patterns or is it that we are training our brains to start noticing all of these things around us that we previously ignored? By studying paranormal phenomena, does this mean we will start to notice it more or possibly even cause it?

The most fearsome monsters of all may inhabit the dark corners of our mind waiting for us to release them through our beliefs and gullibility. The phenomenon feeds on fear and believe. Sometimes it destroys us altogether other times it leads us upwards into the labyrinth of electromagnetic frequencies that form a curtain in the area we call windows and stalk us to drink our blood and create all kinds of mischievous beliefs and misconceptions in our feeble little terrestrial minds.

Are we fulfilling self made prophecies just by studying the paranormal? I have always asked myself this question, although I ask it from a power of suggestion sort of stand point. I never really thought of it from Keel's perspective. Does this mean Keel is onto something? I honestly don't know, but it certainly is a thought provoking discussion and has opened my mind to some different areas of research. What do you think?

This is an interesting hypothesis but what jumps out to me is the statement about Keel feeling an ultra terrestrial can show itself whenever and wherever it wants. At this point the ultra terrestrial would be manifesting in our measurable world of energy and sustaining itself in the form of giving off heat in contrast to the misguided & popular 'cold spot.' Where are they getting this heat energy from? Wouldn't it be the surrounding environment and if so, wouldn't the air & surfaces then have a measured surface temperature response?
